Musician Statement
At the center of my work is creating human connection through new music.
The flute is one of the oldest instruments in human history. It has existed in bone, wood, and metal, since prehistoric times. I am committed to continuing that lineage, not by preserving it unchanged, but by expanding it. Commissioning new works and collaborating with living composers is how I participate in the instrument’s evolution. Each project asks a simple question: what can the flute do that it has not yet done?
My artistic voice is bold, expressive, and curious. I am drawn to music that stretches the instrument’s vocabulary and reconsiders what counts as beautiful. I work frequently with electronics and the Glissando Headjoint, treating timbre as a structural and expressive tool, not just a special effect. Creating new repertoire is not an add-on to my performing life. It is the center of it.
Performance and pedagogy are inseparable for me. Teaching sharpens my listening; performing clarifies my thinking. The collaborative process of bringing a new work into existence, including conversation, experimentation, revision, and performance, mirrors the work I do with students. In both spaces, I am invested in helping ideas become sound.
My Fulbright residency in Egypt was transformative for me as a musician and teacher. Immersion in a different cultural and educational context challenged my assumptions about sound, time, and pedagogy. It required adaptability, humility, and deep listening. That experience continues to shape how I approach collaboration, studio teaching, and artistic leadership.
I am especially drawn to interdisciplinary collaboration because it challenges everyone involved. When music intersects with other disciplines, it asks sharper questions and opens new possibilities. Those are the spaces where I do my best work.

Reviews
“Tammy Evans Yonce is unique among today’s flutists. While her technique is flawless and her intellect profound, she is, ultimately, a supremely musical performer. I have performed with her and heard her perform my music. Both situations are truly magical.”
– Michael Kallstrom, composer/performer
“… bewitchingly performed…” “intrinsically velvet sound…” “… sonic feast for the ears…” “Tammy Evans Yonce chose a rich palette on which to showcase her engaging and sonorous sounds.”
– The Flute View, November 2018
“Tammy Evans is a dream collaborator. Her tone is beautiful, she’s game for experimentation, and she’s a great hang. I loved working with her on of even the beautiful and look forward to writing more pieces for her in the future.”
– Chris Cresswell, Composer/Sound Artist/Guitarist
